A new fun cast of characters to enjoy. I love a mystery with a lead character who is full of spunk and not afraid to jump right in and solve a crime or fall in love. Bones and Roses, the first book in the Cypress Bay mystery series, is such a book.Tish Ballard owns and runs Rest Easy Property Management and is a recovering alcoholic. With her best friend Ivy, an artist and flower child of the 60's, she finds herself trying to solve the mystery of her mother's death. She had always believed her mother ran off with her lover and abandoned her. When she was given the key to a storage unit, she found her mother's body and set out to solve the murder.
I am already reading the second book in the series as the first was very good and worth the reading time.

Bones and Roses Cypress Bay mystery series Volume 1 Eileen Goudge 9780991589425 Books Reviews
The first of the Cypress Bay series, Bones and Roses delivers in classic Eileen Goudge style. It's witty and well-paced, fueled by a compelling plot.
The heroine, Tish Ballard, is a feisty recovering alcoholic investigating her mother's death. When she gets a lead, she's like a bulldog with a bone, and she's not afraid to snarl. She's a winning character, and Goudge surrounds her with a varied and cleverly-drawn cast. Set in coastal California (my old stomping ground), you'll feel the mist and hear the roar from the crashing sea as Tish pursues one lead after another. The author's descriptions are that good.
When you reach the end, you'll give thanks Bones and Roses is the first in a series and you won't have to say goodbye to Tish Ballard for too long.
I don’t normally read mysteries, but I’m a huge Eileen Goudge fan so I had to get Bones and Roses as soon as it came out. I loved it and can’t wait to read the entire series!
The story is absolutely captivating, with so many unexpected twists and turns that I was never able to predict what might happen next. It’s hard to believe that this is Goudge’s first mystery, because she knew just how to build up the suspense, make you think almost anyone could be guilty, and then turn everything around to shock you with the truth!
Eileen Goudge has a rare gift for creating intriguing, complex and well-developed characters. I already knew this because I recently devoured Garden of Lies and The Replacement Wife, which are now two of my all-time favorite books. But I was pleased to discover that even a mystery can also delve deep into the human psyche and relationships in ways that are profoundly moving.
I came to adore Tish and look forward to reading many more books about her adventures. She’s a bit rough around the edges, but that’s one of the many qualities that make her so entertaining and relatable. A recovering alcoholic with a sharp tongue and a talent for breaking and spilling things, Tish’s brutally honest inner dialogue had me laughing at times and tearing up just as often.
The relationships between Tish and all the people in her world are complicated and unpredictable, which made for excellent storytelling. Her interactions with her mentally ill brother were humorous as well as touching and provide meaningful lessons about unconditional love.
The dilemma Tish faced in her love life, including some pretty steamy thoughts and interactions with someone other than her boyfriend, added another delicious level of drama to the story. You’ll have to read the book to find out what I mean by that. But I certainly enjoyed that aspect of the book and needed a cold shower after a few scenes!
I could go on and on about this book and about Eileen Goudge, who is such a talented author, but instead, you should stop reading reviews and grab this book now! You won’t regret it!
Tish is a recovering alcoholic and property manager. Her mother left when she was a child and since her father is dead, she takes care of her brother who is suffering from mental illness. S finds her mother's remains in a storage facility run by an ex cop. The chief of police is a former classmate with whom she has had a run in with when they were in high school. With the help of her best friend, the ex cop and the man her mother left town with, she has begins to try to solve the murder. She becomes involved in some tight situations and scrapes while dealing with her disapproving boy friend. The guilty party is a surprise. The reader will enjoy the characters and story.
As a longtime fan of Eileen Goudge, I was excited to read her first foray into the mystery story genre. She did not disappoint me. Bones and Roses was an intriguing story that had me guessing until its conclusion.
I loved so many of the characters, which were richly drawn. Tish Ballard, the protagonist, was a particular favorite of mine. In her mid-thirties, she was a recovering alcoholic, whose mother had abandoned her now schizophrenic brother and her when they were young children. She was the caregiver of her brother, who was also endearing and funny.
And who would not love Tish's best friend, Ivy, who created dioramas that
featured insects? I wanted one to the point at which I searched online!
I deemed Bones and Roses an old-fashioned mystery because it brought back memories of my days with Nancy Drew. It was an intriguing whodunit from almost the first page, with Tish a grown up Nancy.
The setting in Cypress Bay, an upscale beach community in California, was ideal for the story. Tish's one-woman company that cared for expensive homes let me be a voyeur into places that came to life because of their vivid descriptions.
I would be remiss if I neglected to mention Eileen Goudge's wicked sense of humor. Tish and Ivy made me laugh out loud many times, even when they were in danger.
Bones and Roses left me waiting for the next Cypress Bay story. I cannot imagine anyone who would not have fun unraveling this mystery.
